Zeus Development Corporation tracks some 63 LNG-fueled non-carrier vessels currently. The number is growing monthly. The vessels represent all ship classes other than LNG carriers, more than 300 of which also use LNG for fuel and are tracked by Zeus in its LNG Shipping Fleet database.
Considering that the first LNG-fueled noncarrier was converted only in 2000, the LNG-fueled fleet is growing remarkably. Most are newbuilds due to unique characteristics of LNG. Moreover, use of the fuel has begun to make its way beyond Northern Europe into global markets. Vessels are planned for Asia, North America and South America and are under construction at yards in countries like China and the U.S. Meanwhile, other markets are evaluating projects. Currently, designs are being engineered for ocean-going vessels, including container and bulk cargo ships.
Fleets also are using LNG-fueled vessels for a greater variety of applications. Ferries and offshore service vessels were the initial thrust, but patrol vessels, tankers, tugs and barges will soon be added to the LNG-fueled fleet.
The last decade will be remembered as the period for tests and demonstrations, while this decade is shaping up to be the onset of fleet implementations. The number of vessels per order is climbing. With strengthening emissions regulations and high oil prices, the trend should continue as more of the marine industry’s 90,000 vessels worldwide are converted to LNG.
