High Oil Prices Energize Modular GTL Solutions

In this issue, we learn of a remarkable increase in new GTL technologies to offer oil producers alternatives to re-injecting or flaring associated gas. With oil trading at seven to eight times the price of U.S. Henry Hub natural gas on an energy-equivalent basis, incentives to convert methane and ethane into petroleum-like products that can be blended with crude oil are great.

Petrobras, for example, which has one of the largest reserves of oil and associated gas offshore Brazil, is advancing two modular GTL concepts. In this issue, we learn it has concluded a qualification test for "the world’s first modular GTL unit." The CompactGTL design is reported to incorporate all applications necessary to treat associated gas offshore, using mini-channel steam methane reforming and Fischer Tropsch (FT) reactors to fit within the confines of a floating, production, storage and offloading vessel.

Oxford Catalysts, another GTL technologist working with Petrobras, completed last year a 6 b/d demonstration plant using microchannel reactors to convert gas into FT liquids and wax for blending with crude oil. The skid-mounted unit was built as...Full Article
